§ 10-42. Dogs not to run at large from April 15 to August 15; impoundment.

  • (a)

    It shall be unlawful for any owner or custodian of any dog to allow any dog to run at large in this county during the period of April 15 to August 15 of each calendar year. During this period all dogs must be kept on a leash or under the direct control of the owner or custodian to ensure that the dog is not roaming, running or self-hunting off the property of its owner or custodian.

    (b)

    It shall be the duty of the animal control officer, insofar as reasonably possible, to capture and impound any dog observed running at large during this period of confinement and to notify forthwith the owner or custodian, if reasonably ascertainable, and to dispose of the dog as set forth in Code of Virginia, § 3.2-6546.

    (c)

    Any person convicted of violating this section shall be punished as set forth in section 10-1.
